High Country Slaughter-Processing Facility

Watauga County is creating a “High Country Kill & Chill” livestock slaughter and processing center to meet a critical shortage of local slaughter and processing capacity for meat producers in the county (which will also benefit regional producers). Watauga County will construct a commercial slaughter facility to immediately support over 20 local cut-and-pack operations & commercial meat producers as well as family custom processing serving, conservatively, 500 family farms and livestock producers in the region. The project will bolster farm sustainability and provide additional infrastructure to support our local food infrastructure & agricultural economy.
