Cultivating a Community Learning Lab
The Northeast Regional School of Biotechnology & Agriscience (NERSBA) serves 200 high school students from 5 rural counties including Beaufort, Martin, Pitt, Tyrrell and Washington. The school was established in 2012 to address the need to better prepare students for the growing demands of the agriculture and biotechnology fields in eastern NC. NERSBA is located in rural Jamesville, NC and has begun to establish itself as a community school promoting the importance of agriscience and biotechnology. Cultivating a Community Learning Lab is a comprehensive agriculture program that is focuses on fostering a community of scholars through advanced, innovative education in biotechnology and agriscience in a unique educational setting, empowering scholars and the community with project based learning, communication and leadership skills. This program will not only benefit the scholars of NERSBA, but Martin Community College students, Jamesville Elementary School students, faculty and community members with hands-on learning activities.
