Agricultural Reinvestment Fund

Year Funded

The Agricultural Reinvestment Fund provides cost-share grants to farmers in NC for innovative projects designed to increase farm income and build markets for NC agricultural products. Priority is given to current and former tobacco farmers. The program also produces publications and organizes educational events for the benefit of NC farmers. From 1997 to 2012, NC lost 8,902 farms and 1,030,111 acres of farmland. The largest losses have been from farmers between 50 and 1,000 acres, associated with the shift of tobacco production to fewer, larger farms. The Agricultural Reinvestment Fund is a proven model to increase farm income by migrating the risk of entrepreneurship, replacing lost tobacco income with higher-value agricultural products and providing all NC farmers with models for innovation and entrepreneurship. (Our program was founded din 1997 and was formerly named the Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund.) In 2015 we receive approximately 500 inquiries from NC farmers about the program, which is amount the largest numbers of inquiries in a single year to date.
